Donation Event: An Online Retreat Day from the Mindfulness Network Community Friends

When: 24 Nov 2024
Where: Online Event
Tutors: Danny Jolly, Sarah Pace

About the event:

'Softening into Spaciousness' with Danny Jolly and Sarah Pace

What is involved?

The last step of a three-step breathing space invites us to open out from a grounded anchor, into a broader sense of spacious connection. On this retreat day we'll intentionally explore how this sense of spaciousness can begin to support insight and create the conditions for positive emotions to emerge.

With our human tendency to see the world through a lens of scarcity or 'not good enough', it can be helpful to notice the spaciousness available to us in daily life - which can support us in responding creatively when the mind and body contract around difficult emotions.

Through a variety of standard, and adapted, mindfulness-based practices and postures, using the body, imagination and metaphor, we'll explore how our experience can be gently held by spaciousness. By cultivating mindful awareness we have the potential to open into spaciousness.

The online silent retreat will include:

· periods of both guided and self-directed practice
· short talks
· periods of silence to enable you to connect more fully with your inner experience
· an encouragement to use the time in the morning and afternoon breaks and lunch break for self-care, and continued silent practice

In addition, if you feel the need you can send a private chat to the team and the teachers will either respond to what you raise during the talks and practice guidance, or through arranging an individual meeting with you.

Who is the event for:

This retreat is open to all participants who have regular experience of using the core practices of MBCT or MBSR. To make this day retreat more accessible and inclusive to participants with health conditions and caring commitments we have made this day retreat 5 hours long with 1 hour for lunch and 2 breaks. If possible, to get the most out of this retreat we encourage you to maintain silence and mindfulness through the lunch and breaks.

This day retreat will not be acceptable as a BAMBA teacher’s retreat as it is less than 8 hours in length. BAMBA has agreed to allowing these hours can be logged as CPD for BAMBA teachers.

Preparation for the event and what you will need:

To participate online, you will need:

  • A room where you can close the door and engage in the practice away from family distractions. Confidentiality must be maintained by ensuring that those who are not at the event cannot see your screen or hear the audio. It may be helpful to use headphones.
  • Log in via a computer that is resting on a hard surface and which has audio and a webcam. Please don't use handheld devices.
  • Please be visible on the camera during the session. so that you can be seen by the teacher and the group. If you turn your screen off, it will be noticed by the group and can be both distracting and unsettling for other participants. Of course, if you have technical issues, or need to turn the video off briefly to protect privacy, please feel free to do so.

Consider for your comfort and convenience:

  • Space to lie down during practices if desired.
  • Space to do mindful movements - to be able to stand, to stretch your arms above, below and to your sides. You may also choose to do movement practices seated if this act of care is needed for your body at this time.
  • Space for mindful walking - the ability to take 5 small steps, turn and return. After we have established walking practice as a group, choices will be offered around finding a longer walking path in your room, home or outside.
  • Anything you typically need to support your practice cushions, blankets, layers of clothing to support temperature regulation.
  • We recommend that you have drinks, snacks and lunch prepared or easily available for the day.
  • It is encouraged to maintain silence and mindfulness through lunch and break, if possible.
