Silent meditation retreats can be very supportive to wellbeing; however, due to their intensive nature, it is advised that they are undertaken at a time of relative stability in psychological health. You should be in a relatively stable period of mental well-being and have adequate psychological resilience to attend an intensive silent retreat.
For this reason, attending a retreat following recent (within the past year) experiences of significant trauma or psychiatric illness is not recommended.
Similarly, if you are currently experiencing acute emotional distress such as serious depression or anxiety, or trauma-related distress including nightmares, flashbacks and intrusive thoughts this may not be the best time for you to attend a silent retreat. If you are having these sorts of experiences, finding a setting to deepen your practice where more interpersonal support is offered is likely to be more helpful.
If you are currently under the care of a mental health professional, please discuss your attendance with them.
Please answer the following question with these guidelines in mind. If there is any uncertainty about whether this is a good time for you to attend this retreat, we can organise a time for you to discuss this with our retreat lead. If you would like to organise a time to speak, please contact us on: retreats@mindfulness-network.org
