Specialist Training: Mindfulness in a One-to-One Context

When: 17 Jan 2024 - 21 Feb 2024
Where: Online Event
Tutors: Bridgette O'Neill, Rosalie Dores

The contemporary mindfulness movement was founded on group-based courses, however the benefit of bringing a mindfulness-based approach to individuals is now being recognized. This six-week specialist training is for those interested in bringing mindfulness into a one-to-one context.

Participants will engage in an experiential learning process, developing relational skills and understanding, while developing a plan for implementation that is specific to their setting. The training will be of greatest benefit to those already working within a one-to-one context such as therapy, coaching, teaching, chaplaincy, healthcare, social work, and other carer work. It is also relevant for those wanting to teach a mindfulness-based program curriculum to individuals rather than groups.

Who is it for?

Those who:

Are interested in exploring mindfulness in the context of their professional lives and work one to one, such as coaches, therapists, yoga teachers, physiotherapists, midwives, chaplains, nurses, complementary therapists, teachers, carers, community health workers, etc.

Have previously trained to teach a mindfulness-based program curriculum and want to learn how to deliver it within a one-to-one context.

Are mindfulness teachers who want to deepen into the relational aspect of mindfulness practice.

Learning Aims:

Learn, and practice, specific relational mindfulness skills.

Experience the ways these skills can be used within a one-to-one context.

Explore the various ways mindfulness can be implemented within a one-to-one context

Learn ways to tailor the delivery of mindfulness in one-to-one settings.

Understand specific considerations for one-to-one work, including implications for guiding practice, leading inquiry and establishing a learning container in which mindfulness can be safely and effectively explored and exploring specific learning themes relevant to mindfulness.

Pre-requisites for attending:

  • Participants need to have been meditating regularly for at least six months using practices that are compatible with mindfulness-based approaches.
  • Participation in an eight-week mindfulness-based program would be of benefit and is a requirement for anyone teaching a mindfulness-based program curriculum.

Nb. This training is not curriculum based. If you want to teach Mindfulness-based Program curricula as part of this approach, you will also need to complete the relevant Curriculum Specialist (such as MBSR, MBCT).

Other information:

Please see the British Association of Mindfulness-Based Approaches (BAMBA) for good practice guidelines and other information for mindfulness-based teachers.

Certificate of Attendance. Please note that we give a Bangor University Certificate of Attendance that details the nature of the course and the hours involved. However, this does not constitute an authorisation to teach mindfulness-based approaches. The development and interest in the potential of mindfulness within a range of settings is rapidly growing and training processes are therefore becoming more structured. Within the UK, though, there are currently no formal qualifications/certification processes which regulate competency in teaching mindfulness-based approaches. This requires those of us working in this developing field to inquire deeply into our own practice, our integrity and our intentions, as well as the boundaries of our skills, competencies and understandings.
