When: 30 Jun 2023 - 9 Jul 2023
Where: Online Event
Tutors: Trish Bartley, Christina Shennan
About the training:
Dates:
Half day orientation 30th June
This specialist teacher training is for mindfulness-based teachers currently working or interested in working with people with cancer. We will explore the values, practice and approach of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Cancer (MBCT-Ca).
This is a unique opportunity to develop skills, inspiration and understanding and to connect with others working in psycho-oncology, cancer support and palliative care.
Over the course we will explore the intention, approach and new aspects of the eight-week MBCT-Ca programme, paying particular attention to:
- ways of adapting the core practices as they are guided for cancer participants
- the short practices and newprocesses that have been created within MBCT-Ca
- ways that we can emphasise and work with kindness and self compassion within the intervention
- understanding the cognitive model that underpins MBCT-Ca – and the place of the four practice movements of Intention; Coming Back; Turning Towards; and Kindness
- exploring the teaching implications of working with this population and how we can support ourselves as teachers.
The training will use a variety of (mostly experiential) processes including:
- practice
- dialogue and inquiry in both peer groups and the large group
- discussion and reflection in small and large groups
- presentation
MBCT for Cancer (MBCT-Ca) is being offered to people with cancer in clinical settings, charity support groups, and many other contexts in the UK and abroad. The MBCT-Ca programme was developed over many years in a Welsh oncology centre by Trish Bartley and supported by John Teasdale. MBCT for Cancer (a teacher’s handbook) was published in 2012 (Bartley, 2012).
This training is an element of the formal Teacher Training Pathway (TTP) delivered in association with Bangor University and the certificate of attendance can be included in your TTP Portfolio. This course can also be taken as a stand-alone training event as part of your own Continuing Professional and Personal Development. If you register on the TTP after having completed this training, the certificate can be included retrospectively.
Participants must commit to the entire online training. Unless there are exceptional circumstances, we are unable to negotiate late arrivals or early leaving.
Pre-requisites for attending:
This is a specialist mindfulness-based teacher training for those who are working in oncology or cancer support settings, (or planning to in the future) and have completed level 1 mindfulness teacher training and are already teaching MBCT/MBSR to this and/or other populations.
All participants need to have:
- personal experience of an MBCT or MBSR eight-week course
- an established personal mindfulness practice
- participated in a mindfulness-based Teacher Training Retreat level 1 (or equivalent)
- knowledge and experience of oncology and/or cancer support settings or a planned process to acquire this in the near future.
It is strongly recommended that you read Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Cancer (Bartley, 2012) before you attend this course. During the training, participants will practice guiding some of the short practices that are detailed in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Cancer and in Mindfulness: A Kindly Approach to Being with Cancer (Bartley 2016), so may find these books useful to have as a resource on site, as well as for future reference.
About the trainers:
Trish Bartley developed MBCT for Cancer, through her work as a mindfulness teacher to cancer patients at a regional oncology unit since 2001. She is a teacher trainer for CMRP and leads mindfulness-based retreats and workshops internationally. After the success of the teachers handbook (Bartley,2012) Mindfulness – A Kindly Approach to Being with Cancer (Bartley,2017) was produced as a companion book for people with cancer themselves.
Christina Shennan is an experienced psychotherapist working in the oncology field, in hospice and day care settings. She has been teaching MBCT to cancer patients and carers since 2008. She leads mindfulness workshops for cancer health professionals and wrote: What is the evidence for the use of mindfulness-based interventions in cancer care? A review. Shennan, C., Payne, S. and Fenlon, which was pulished in Psycho-Oncology in 2011.
Our trainers are all members of the Bangor University Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice training team. All have been extensively trained in this approach and engage in a rigorous ongoing process of training and supervision. We use strict criteria when selecting teachers/trainers to work with us.

Other information:
Please see the British Association of Mindfulness-Based Approaches (BAMBA) for good practice guidelines and other information for mindfulness-based teachers.
Certificate of Attendance. Please note that we give a Bangor University Certificate of Attecat details the nature of the course and the hours involved. However, this does not constitute an authorisation to teach mindfulness-based approaches. The development and interest in the potential of mindfulness within a range of settings is rapidly growing and training processes are therefore becoming more structured. Within the UK, though, there are currently no formal qualifications/certification processes which regulate competency in teaching mindfulness-based approaches. This requires those of us working in this developing field to inquire deeply into our own practice, our integrity and our intentions, as well as the boundaries of our skills, competencies and understandings.
